Wrought aluminum-manganese alloys (3xxx)

Dr. Dmitri Kopeliovich

According to the Wrought aluminum alloys designation system, alloys of this series are designated 3xxx.

This group includes manganese (Mn) as the major alloying element.

Magnesium (Mg) may be added to the alloys of 3xxx series as a minor alloying element.

Aluminum-manganese alloys are non-heat-treatable and may be strengthened by cold work (strain hardening).

Magnesium may be added to the alloys for achieving solid solution hardening even in annealed conditions.

Alloys of this series have moderate mechanical strength, high ductility and excellent corrosion resistance.

Aluminum-manganese alloys (3xxx series) are used for manufacturing foil, roof sheets, cooking utensils, rigid containers (binary Al-Mn alloy 3003) and for beverage cans (Al-Mn-Mg alloy 3004).
