According to the Unified Numbering System (UNS):
Red Brasses and Leaded Red Brasses are copper alloys, containing 2-15% of zinc (Zn) as the major alloying element and up to 5% of tin (Sn) and up to 8% of lead (Pb) as additional alloying elements. Cast Red Brasses and cast Leaded Red Brasses (Ounce Metal, Valve Metal, Plumbing Goods Brass) are designated with the numbers from C83300 through C83999.
Cast Yellow brasses are copper alloys, containing 23-41% of zinc (Zn) as the major alloying element. Yellow brasses may contain up to 3% of lead (Pb) and up to 1.5% of tin (Sn) as additional alloying elements. Cast Yellow Brasses are designated with the numbers from C85000 through C85999.
Brasses containing up to 35% of zinc have mono-phase structure (α-phase).
These alloys are very ductile.
Brasses containing more than 35% of zinc have binary phase structure (mixture of α- phase and β-phase).
These alloys are less ductile.
Machinability of the Cast Brasses (particularly alloyed with lead) is very good.
Cast Brasses are used in architectural and decorative applications, for manufacturing heating and cooling equipment, electrical equipment, parts of valves, pump impellers, pipe fittings, small gears, door an window hardware, gas line fittings.
